CHAPTER FIFTY-ONE:
Alphas
AFTER DEAN FINISHED HIS PHONE CALL, he ran outside to grab the phone charger he’d left in the truck. I started pulling my things out of my bag and getting ready for bed. Sera finished her shower and decided to check in with her mom. We planned to take her to the airport the next day before heading out to meet John.
As she spoke with her mom, Dean came back looking puzzled.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, setting my small bathroom bag on the bed.
He held out my scarf.
“Oh, you found it! Where was it?”
“In the glove compartment of the truck,” he replied, brows furrowed.
I raised my eyebrows. “Really? I thought I took it into the warehouse. I don’t remember leaving it in the truck.”
“Yeah, you didn’t,” Dean confirmed.
“Dean, what are you saying?” Sam asked, turning from Sera and focusing on us. “Someone planted her scarf in the truck?”
Dean didn’t answer.
“Why would someone do that?” Sam pressed.
“Maybe someone wanted her to get attacked,” Dean suggested.
“What?” I said, startled.
“Think about it. That demon and then the djinn attacked you while you were busy helping me from a distance,” Dean said. “Someone knows what you can do and… and…”
“And? What? Worked out an evil plan with a demon and a djinn?” I asked, incredulous. “That doesn’t seem right. Maybe I dropped it, and someone found it. And they just… put it in there for me.”
It sounded lame even to me. I’d asked everyone if they’d seen my scarf before we left. No one had. But who would be working with both a djinn and a demon? That didn’t seem right either.
“That’s not all,” Dean continued. “Before I called Dad, I got a message from Bobby.”
We waited.
“He got a hold of Ellen. She runs a hunter roadhouse,” Dean explained to me. “Anyway, she’s heard of Christian and Gwen. Said they’re real good hunters.”
“Well, that doesn’t sound bad,” Sam offered.
“Yeah, but apparently, she also said they’re dangerous to everyone and everything around them. She compared their hunting to Hannibal Lecter being a good psychiatrist. She suggested we let them handle whatever they’re working on—and stay out of it.”
“Then why is Dad teaming up with them?” Sam asked.
“Good question,” Dean replied, sitting down on the bed next to my bag.
“And did you talk to John?” I asked quietly.
“Yeah.” Dean rubbed his face. “He’s going to meet us back in Illinois.”
“How come we always get more questions than answers with these things?” I sighed, pulling out my pajamas.
Dean was about to respond but got distracted by my bag. He reached in and pulled out Chester—the teddy bear he won for me the night he proposed.
“You still have this?” he asked, holding up the bear.
“Yes, of course I still have him,” I said.
Dean studied Chester with a grin.
“I hope you’re not going to make fun of Chester.”
“No, I’m not going to make fun of Chester,” he replied. He held the bear out to me. I took him. Dean patted Chester’s head. “He’s like… our love child.”
I chuckled and went to get ready for bed.
WE STOPPED AT A DINER for breakfast before heading to the airport. Dean and I drove in the Impala, while Sam and Sera rode in John’s truck. They were quiet, comfortably so. It was amazing how close they’d grown in such a short time.
Dean and I waited while Sam dropped Sera off for her flight. Then Sam followed us as we made our way to Illinois to meet John.
Halfway there, Dean’s phone rang. Speak of the devil. John had more information on the “monsters on steroids.” From his research with the Balans, they believed we were dealing with alphas, the first of each monster species. Alphas had stronger abilities than their offspring.
As to why we were seeing more alphas all of a sudden, they still didn’t know. The current theory blamed the stopped apocalypse.
We stopped at a gas station and mentioned the alpha situation to Sam.
“So what? They’re going to hunt alphas now?” Sam asked.
“I don’t know,” Dean replied, putting the nozzle back into the pump. “There’s something not right with any of this.”
Dean’s phone rang again.
He glanced between Sam and me, then answered. “Hey, Dad.”
He was silent for a few moments. Sam and I shifted, waiting. Since John came back, we hadn’t had much of a chance to catch our breath—let alone figure out how he returned.
Finally, Dean spoke into the phone. “That’s a lot of guys for one hunt… Who?”
His eyes darted back and forth as he listened. “Do you?… How’d you track him down?”
“Another hunt?” I whispered to Sam. What the heck was going on? Can we take a day off?
Sam didn’t answer. He was focused on Dean.
“That’s all I get? ‘We’re good’?” Dean sighed. “We’re still too far out to get there before sunset… You sure?”
He said his goodbyes and hung up.
He took a breath. “Dad and a bunch of hunters are going after the alpha vamp. They got an approximate location from those vamps the Balans took out before Dad showed up. They did some digging and—”
“And now they’re taking out an alpha?” Sam interrupted. “Where are they?”
“Just outside Lansing, Michigan,” Dean answered.
“But that’s like an hour away,” I said. We could definitely meet them by sunset.
“I know.”
“So, what’s your plan?” Sam asked.
“We’re going to get to the bottom of this once and for all.” Dean headed back to the driver’s side of the Impala. He turned to Sam. “We’re tracking Dad and his new hunter friends.”
“And if there really is an alpha vampire?” I asked.
“Big daddy bloodsucker? I ain’t going to miss that.” Dean smiled and jumped into the car. “We’ll follow you, Sam.”
Sam nodded and returned to his truck. I climbed into the front seat of the Impala.
“I don’t trust him,” Dean confided. “They’re all hiding something.”
“Like what?”
“I don’t know. But I can feel it.”
