CHAPTER FORTY:
Evelyn
WE RACED TO THE ADDRESS SERA PROVIDED. She was already in the driveway, waiting for us.
“Sam, what’s happening?” Sera asked.
Sam ran past her and up to the door. “I told you, you shouldn’t have come.”
Dean caught up to him, and I stayed back with Sera as they pounded on the door.
“Hello? Anyone home?” Dean shouted.
“You said Evelyn might be in danger. What kind of danger?” Sera asked.
Dean examined the door. “I can’t knock this sucker down. I’ve gotta pick it.”
He started working the lock while Sam banged on the windows, which were covered with security bars.
“What are you guys, burglars?” Sera asked, looking between all of us.
“I wish it was that simple. Look, you really should wait in the car. It’s for your own good,” Sam told her.
Dean got the door open. “Analina, stay with Sera out here.”
Without waiting for an answer, they went inside.
I highly doubted Sera would stay outside.
“The hell I will,” she said, pushing forward. “Evelyn’s a friend.”
“Evelyn?” Sera called, coming in behind Sam and Dean. I followed her.
The house felt cold. The ghost was still here — but it wasn’t moving.
We reached the lounge. A woman sat half‑turned away from us. The painting was visible from where we stood.
“Evelyn? It’s Sera Arkwright… Are you all right?”
Evelyn was dead. We all knew it — even without my ability. But Sera reached out to touch her shoulder.
For an instant, a faint blue light flickered from Sera’s hands. It faded so quickly that anyone who couldn’t feel what was happening wouldn’t have noticed.
I understood immediately — she was trying to heal her friend. But she couldn’t.
Evelyn’s soul was gone.
“Sera, don’t. Sera!” Sam cried out.
The moment Sera touched her, Evelyn’s head tipped back — revealing a slashed throat.
The ghost’s M.O.
Sera screamed. “Oh my God. Oh my God!”
It was sickening.
Sam wrapped an arm around her and led her out of the room.
I glanced up at the painting. It looked different.
The father was looking down at his daughter — not straight ahead.
A cold vibe emanated from the canvas.
“It’s definitely connected to the painting,” I said softly to Dean. “It’s in there.”
He nodded beside me. “We just have to figure out how to torch this sucker… for good.”
But first, we had to leave before the cops arrived.
Sam didn’t want to leave Sera alone after seeing her friend like that, but we didn’t have a choice.
We went back to the motel to figure out what was keeping the painting grounded here. There had to be something the ghost left behind — something with its DNA. Something we could salt and burn.
ON THE LAPTOP, Dean and I searched for possible item connections to the Merchants — anything that tied back to the ghost.
Sam paced the floor.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
Sam opened it, and Sera stormed past him into the room.
“Hey, you all right?” Sam asked.
“No, actually. I just lied to the cops and told them I went to Evelyn’s alone and found her like that.”
Dean smirked. Sam looked relieved. My shoulders relaxed. At least the cops wouldn’t be looking for us.
“Thank you,” Sam said.
“Don’t thank me. I’m about to call them right back if you don’t tell me what the hell’s going on. Who’s killing these people?”
We exchanged looks.
I thought we should tell her. She wasn’t oblivious to the supernatural world. She was a supernatural being, technically.
Dean raised his eyebrows at Sam.
Sam looked back at Sera. “What.”
“What?” she asked.
“It’s not a who. It’s a what that’s killing those people,” he corrected.
Sera stared at him like he’d lost his mind.
He sighed. “Sera, you saw that painting move at the auction house.”
She rubbed her arms and looked away. “No… no, I was… I was seeing things. It’s impossible.”
I had a feeling she knew very well it was possible. Her secret might be holding her back.
“Yeah, well, welcome to our world,” Dean said, glancing at me.
“Sera, I know this sounds crazy… but we think that painting is haunted,” Sam said, stepping closer to her.
“Think about it. Evelyn. The Telescas. They both had the painting. And there were others before that. Wherever this thing goes, people die. And we’re trying to stop it. That’s the truth.”
Sera sucked in a deep breath. “Then I guess you’d better show me. I’m coming with you.”
“What?” Sam exclaimed. “No, Sera, no. You should just go home. This stuff can get dangerous and… and I don’t want you to get hurt.”
“Look, you guys are probably crazy. But if you’re right about this? Well, me and my mom sold that painting that might’ve gotten these people killed.
Look. I’m not saying I’m not scared — because I’m scared as hell. But I’m not going to run and hide either.”
She walked to the door. None of us moved.
“So are we going or what?”
She opened the door and walked out.
“Sam?” Dean called.
Sam looked over at us.
“Marry that girl.”
