CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE:
The Family Business
WE STAYED AT BOBBY’S for a couple of hours, just talking with John. We briefly mentioned the apocalypse we stopped and showed him a few wedding photos we had on hand. He insisted he couldn’t remember anything from the past five years—only what happened before he escaped and when he showed up at the cemetery.
The more we talked, the more I believed he was back as a human. He never gave off any cold or warm vibes. There were no odors. He didn’t react to the actual silver silverware. He drank another beer with a splash of holy water in it. He acted perfectly normal—well, as normal as an old‑time hunter ever acts.
Sam, Dean, and I decided to stay at a motel since there wasn’t much room at Bobby’s for all of us, and we wanted to debrief in private.
We all agreed that John seemed human. But something still bothered me—a gut feeling I couldn’t shake.
“What else?” Dean asked, noticing my expression after I confirmed his evaluation of the meeting.
“I don’t know. I haven’t met your father before, but it seems like… he’s hiding something. Not lying, exactly. More like avoiding the truth,” I confided.
Dean nodded and looked over at Sam. “Yeah, I thought so too.”
Sam didn’t say anything, but it felt like we were all in agreement. The next question was: what was he hiding?
We planned to meet John again the following morning. Maybe we’d figure it out then.
Sam called Sera that night and filled her in. Dean and I went over our meeting with John again, looking for any signs we might’ve missed.
I studied Dean for a moment. He still seemed stressed, but it was different than before. He no longer had that determination that it wasn’t his father, or the stoic reaction. His leg bounced, and he kept pacing. I didn’t want to come right out and ask how he felt. I couldn’t imagine how I’d feel if my dead father came back from the grave.
“Did he sound or act like your dad?” I asked after a moment.
Dean sighed and sat back down. “Yeah, he did. I mean, it’s been a while, but you don’t forget things. He swallowed his beer the same way. Smiled the same way. Spoke the same way… But there’s something off about all this.”
“Well, it’s not every day your dad comes back from the dead,” I offered.
“Yeah, but it’s more than that,” Dean continued. “I mean, Sam and I have both died before and came back. Granted, it wasn’t five years later, but… I don’t know. There’s something else going on.”
“We’ll figure it out.”
“Yeah.” He looked around. Sam was still in the other room, talking to Sera. “I guess in a way, I was hoping it really wasn’t him, you know? I kinda hoped he went to Heaven and didn’t have to deal with the crap left down here.”
He paused. I didn’t say anything. I wasn’t sure what to say.
Dean forged on. “Coming back from the dead ain’t easy. Things changed a lot since he died… or didn’t die… I just can’t shake this feeling that we’re missing something. Something big.”
“We’ll see him again tomorrow. Maybe we’ll figure it out.”
He nodded and went silent. It was a lot to take in.
“Dean,” I said.
“Yeah?”
“Do I really look like a hooker?”
He smiled, then laughed. “Hardly.”
“I’m seriously considering changing my wardrobe,” I half‑teased. New clothes would be nice.
He pulled me close. “You can if you want, but I think you’re perfect the way you are.”
He kissed me on the lips.
I looked up at him and smiled. “Is this your way of saying you don’t want to gamble for my new wardrobe fund?”
“Yes,” he said without hesitation.
AFTER BREAKFAST, we stopped back at Bobby’s. Apparently, John had been busy since we left. Bobby said he’d gone out to gather supplies. On his initial trip to Bobby’s, John had caught wind of a vampire case and wanted to check it out. He didn’t think any other hunters were in the area, and “someone should do something about those bloodsucking monsters.”
“He wants to go hunting?” Dean asked. “We don’t know how he got back or who was behind it, and he wants to stick his neck out by hunting?”
Bobby didn’t bat an eye. “Don’t shoot the messenger. As far as I know, that’s John. How he got back is another story. According to my research, the only way he could’ve returned is through angelic power, demonic power, or heavy‑duty witchcraft.”
We all exchanged a look.
“Seeing how witchcraft tends to leave a disaster in its wake, I’m leaning toward the other two,” Bobby continued. “Unless you three have any input.”
Sam looked at Dean before replying, “Well, actually, we’re pretty sure it’s not angelic.”
“Why’s that?” Bobby asked.
“Because Cas didn’t know of any resurrections,” Dean said shortly. “It wasn’t done through the winged monkeys. I guess they’re too busy fighting each other to care about us humans.”
“So that leaves demonic,” Bobby stated. “Unfortunately, not just any demon can resurrect a soul and a body. That takes some powerful mojo. We’re talking higher‑level demon.”
“Great,” Dean muttered.
“Speaking of demons, have you heard anything from Crowley?” Sam asked.
“Yeah, well, I summoned that lying sack of shit a week or two ago,” Bobby said, crossing the room. He leaned against the table.
“And?” Dean prompted.
“And nothing. He ain’t giving it back.”
“But he said he borrowed it. He has to give it back,” I argued.
“According to the contract, he only has to make a ‘best effort’ to return my soul,” Bobby sighed.
“So what? You’ve got a hellhound on your ass now?” Dean asked, getting upset.
“Not yet… ten years.”
“Damn,” Dean muttered, pacing.
“Bobby, we’ll figure something out,” Sam said. “We’re not giving up on this.”
“Oh, I know we ain’t. This ain’t over. Believe me,” Bobby said roughly.
We heard a vehicle pull up.
Bobby quickly said, “Don’t mention this to John. I didn’t exactly tell him about the deal yet since we didn’t know what we were dealing with. Best to remain paranoid.”
We nodded as John entered the house.
“Hey, everyone,” he greeted.
“Dad,” Sam said with a nod.
John placed a bag on the kitchen table and made his way into the room.
“We, uh, heard you have a job,” Dean started, his voice a little unsteady.
“Yeah,” John said brightly. His cheerful tone sounded a little forced to me. “I caught wind of a vampire nest on my way here. Back near Deadwood. I stopped and started to look into it myself, but these vamps… these vamps seem different than what I was used to hunting. So I decided to continue here to see if I needed to know anything new about them since I was… uh, gone.”
“How do they seem different?” Sam asked.
“They’re stronger, for one,” John said. He pulled out some newspaper articles he must’ve collected on his way over. The dates weren’t that old. “There was also an attack in the daytime.”
Dean read over the articles. “Are you sure it’s a vampire?”
“Yeah. Yeah, I am,” John answered. “Bite marks. Drained blood. You know the signs. I talked to some locals, and it all fit. Anyway, I figured I could use some backup.”
He paused. “So, are you guys up for this?”
We all exchanged looks. It wasn’t that we couldn’t handle vampires—we’d taken out more than I cared to count. But could we do a job with John? Although we were fairly certain it was him, something still felt off. Jumping into a case like this didn’t seem smart.
John noticed our hesitation. “You do still hunt, right? I assumed after stopping the apocalypse you continued to help people. Maybe the apocalypse did something to make these vampires different?”
“No, I mean, yeah, we do,” Dean started. “That’s not it.”
Sam picked up when Dean stopped. “But you just got back, Dad. Are you sure you want to do this now?”
“Boys, I’m fine. I feel great,” he said, holding his arms wide. “I might not remember the last five years, but I remember how to hunt.”
We glanced quickly at each other. Dean shrugged.
“You want to hunt—we’ll hunt.”
